Taking Control

Hello Everybody!

It's been a great week being a part of some biometric screenings!  I've been able to meet some pretty amazing people, while also enjoying the beautiful sights of the San Rafael Swell.  I enjoy participating in the screenings, not only to know more about our participants, but also to help them KNOW more about themselves. I like the saying "ignorance is bliss," and in this situation I strongly believe in "ignorance is bliss, UNTIL you are lying in a hospital bed."  What does that mean?, you ask.  Well, you can go on living your life never having anything checked, until one day you are lying on a hospital bed hooked up to a heart monitor... OR you can check on how you are doing NOW to prevent ever being in that situation.  Ignorance could very well require a very hefty bill.

"I have never had my blood sugar checked before-", “I don't even know what my cholesterol is-" and "After this screen last year, I went to my doctor and found out I had..."  These are just a few of the comments we hear during our brief screening process. Many of our participants love the fact that this important information is available on the spot with just a ten minute visit, and can be sent to them electronically within one to two days.  This is possible due to EMI Health’s new health "report cards". Our participants have vital information regarding their current health, enabling them to work WITH their doctor to see where further improvements can be made in their overall health and well being!

Our screenings include: cholesterols levels, glucose levels (diabetes risk), blood pressure, and body composition.  Through a small finger stick, we are able to provide people with important information in four key areas regarding their health, and take a general look at their overall wellness.  Those participating now have the knowledge and power to take control of their health and improve in those areas that need attention.  Hearing the sentiments- "This is good to know-," and "What can I do to improve this-" are what makes my job as fulfilling and enjoyable as it is!  I love seeing people take charge of their healthcare!

“COME IN PILOT...What’s your status?”

You are the pilot flying to a wonderful destination. This could be your first time, or your twentieth time flying there. All you know is that this destination is the place that will make you happy and content in life. You are confident in your plane and in your ability to fly it.  As the pilot you are in control not only of the plane but all the instruments within it.  Your plane can take you wherever you want to go. You receive clearance and get the “Go Ahead”, to take off and are soon on your way!  It feels so good... at first.  Suddenly you find yourself in trouble, in doubt, or losing your desire to get to that wonderful destination.  What do you do? The first person you call for help is the control tower.  As your lifeline in the sky, upon hearing your “Mayday,” they are equipped with the knowledge and ability to help you through the inclement weather, the loss of instrument guidance, and to support you and comfort you through challenging times. They are also there to encourage, praise and congratulate you along your way as you touchdown at your final destination. Just as with life and your health and happiness: YOU are the pilot.  No one can fly your plane but you.  You are the one in control, and only you know your abilities and where you want to be.  However, just like the control tower, a wellness coach can be there to guide, help, inform and encourage you along your journey. They can help you align your goals that ultimately guide you to your destination.

What is a Wellness Coach?

A wellness coach is your partner in creating solutions to issues preventing you from feeling your best. They help you create your unique and optimal state of wellbeing.  Your wellness coach will help you set goals and take action to move you from your present state to where you would like to be.  They help you determine your best next step.  They help you see and achieve the possibilities.  Coaching is effective because it combines accountability with action.  Coaches look at how to make things happen; not why something did not happen in the past. Wellness is about the body, mind, and spirit thus reflecting the wide range of personal definitions of being well: exercising more consistently and effectively, losing weight, feeling stronger and more energetic, eating proper amounts of nutritious foods, practicing gratitude and appreciation, being happy and energized, making time for you, experiencing a sense of connectedness and peace, and feeling calm and balanced.  Participants experience a sense of clarity about their values.  And when aligning their behaviors with their values, they experience a deepened sense of purpose.
